This is the first objective for the Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris 10 exam and it is a vague one. Here is the official objective:

Explain the Solaris 10 OS installation and upgrade options for CD / DVD, including how to provide Minimal Installations for SPARC, x64, and x86-based systems.

Googling for some of these keywords didn’t find much of anything. There are a number of ways to install or upgrade Solaris, although some do not directly use a DVD or CD. A flash archive is a non-dvd/cd option, for example. Solaris does have an option for Live Upgrades which allows for upgrading the operating system while the system continues to run. The standard upgrade involves booting from CD or DVD in a manner consistent with installation but selecting an upgrade option. From this perspective, there is only one DVD/CD process for installing or upgrading, although the process diverges along the way. There are three modes for install/upgrade (gui, text, and nowin) which are discussed in the next objective.

If anyone else has any input on this objective, please leave a comment and we’ll discuss it.
